John Covach is a distinguished music scholar with degrees from the University of Michigan and a Fulbright scholar experience in Vienna, Austria. He has taught at several prestigious institutions and his students hold notable academic positions. Covach has published extensively on popular and twelve-tone music and the philosophy and aesthetics of music. He is a co-editor of several books and the author of the textbook "What’s That Sound? An Introduction to Rock Music." Covach serves on editorial boards and as a General Editor for the University of Michigan Press's monograph series on popular music. As a guitarist, he performs in the progressive-rock band Land of Chocolate and other projects.
