Honoring Women's Legacies

Aloha Beautiful Souls,

It's truly a thrilling era to be a woman today. As I deepen my connection with Mother Nature, I find myself aligning more closely with my authentic self. I take immense joy in sharing the profound wisdom of others and the breathtaking beauty of the natural world with all of you. Life is a gift, and the divine messages I receive from the whispers of Nature embolden me to speak my truth with unwavering conviction.

The subject of this blog holds a special place in my heart, resonating deeply both as a woman and as someone who acknowledges the echoes of my past lives shaping my present and future. I humbly stand on the shoulders of my predecessors, profoundly grateful for the invaluable wisdom they've imparted to me. By honoring the resilience and power of women throughout history, we also pay homage to the sacred essence of Mother Earth herself.

As we navigate the complexities of our modern world, it's essential to remember and honor the women who have played pivotal roles in shaping our societies and communities. From the halls of power to the heart of our neighborhoods, women have been the driving force behind progress, change, and resilience. Today, I want to share with you the inspiring stories of the Clan Mothers—women whose wisdom, strength, and leadership have left an indelible mark on history.

On Thursday, Feb 22, I have the great honor of interviewing historians Katya Miller and Kris Farquhar, who will unveil information that will turn your heads about equality.

Atop the U.S. Capitol Dome in Washington, D.C., stands the majestic Statue of Freedom, a symbol of our nation's history and identity. Yet, behind this iconic figure lies a rich tapestry of stories waiting to be told. Katya Miller, a Cultural Historian, has dedicated her life to unraveling the mysteries of the Statue of Freedom and uncovering its native connections. Through her research and conversations with Clan Mothers like Alice Papineau Dewasenta, Katya has gained profound insights into the significance of the Statue's imagery and symbolism.

Alice Papineau Dewasenta, a Clan Mother of the Onondaga Nation, embodies the essence of strength and resilience. Her unwavering dedication to her people and her commitment to preserving their cultural heritage serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Through her wisdom and knowledge, Alice sheds light on the true meaning of the Statue of Freedom's crowning feature, connecting past and present in a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of Indigenous women.

Similarly, Joanne Shenandoah, a renowned singer-songwriter and cultural ambassador, carries on her family's tradition of storytelling and advocacy. Through her music and activism, Joanne honors the traditional values of the Haudenosaunee, celebrating the vital role of women as life-givers and custodians of Mother Earth. Her commitment to preserving her people's heritage and promoting rematriation—a return to sacred teachings and practices—serves as a rallying cry for Indigenous communities around the world.

As we reflect on the contributions of women like Polly Cooper and Louise Herne, we are reminded of the profound impact that individual actions can have on history. Polly Cooper's courage and generosity saved George Washington's army during the harsh winter of 1777, while Louise Herne's advocacy for accurate representation highlights the importance of reclaiming our narratives and empowering future generations.

Living on the Big Island of Hawaii, I am deeply grateful for the rich tapestry of women who have shaped the history of our islands. Hawaii, once a matriarchal society, owes much of its legacy to the strength and resilience of its women. Today, we continue to be inspired by remarkable figures like Pua Case, whose unwavering commitment to social and environmental justice echoes the courageous spirit of our ancestors. Their legacy serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the profound impact women can have in shaping a more just and equitable world.

In honoring the legacies of these remarkable women, we must also acknowledge the ongoing struggles for gender equality and women's rights. As Louise Herne aptly states, "Until women are put at the forefront of community with leadership positions, decision-making power, and a voice for the people, this country will not be the superpower it was intended to be." It is time for us to recognize the inherent worth and dignity of every woman, to amplify their voices, and to ensure that their contributions are valued and respected.

As we envision a world guided by principles of equality, respect, and justice, let us draw inspiration from the stories of the Clan Mothers. Their resilience, wisdom, and leadership serve as a reminder of the transformative power of women's voices.

As we draw this journey to a close, I invite you to reflect on the remarkable women who have left an indelible mark on your life and the world around you. Perhaps you stand among them, a beacon of strength and resilience in your own right. Embrace your brilliance, share your wisdom, and continue to illuminate the path forward for generations to come. Together, we can build a future where all women are honored, respected, and celebrated for their invaluable contributions to our world, and let us honor the power and potential of women everywhere.

In solidarity and reverence,

Big Love and Aloha, Donna Maltz 🌸
