7 Top Tips to Help You Flip Adversity Into Success
It’s not what happens in life that defines you, but how you deal with your situations. Use these tips to turn adversity into success.
1. Believe in What You Are Doing
Thomas Edison tried thousands of times before perfecting the light bulb. The point: he believed in what he was doing. When you try something untested, you must take a leap of faith—otherwise, it’s too easy to give up. Without belief, ventures crumble.
2. Learn from Your Failures
Successful people will tell you: they got there by overcoming failures. They learned from each failure and tried something different. In each iteration, they learned something new and continued until success. Accepting that failure is part of success diminishes our fear of trying new things.
3. Let Others Help You
When facing adverse situations, allow others to support you. More than likely, people around you have experienced what you’re going through—few face something truly unique. Reach out to those you trust, get real, and allow honesty. Spill your guts and be open to receiving. Getting the help you need beats struggling alone. Some avoid reaching out from embarrassment, but those people once faced adversity too. They’ll appreciate and help.
4. Adjust Your Expectations
Adverse situations often stem from setting expectations higher than your current preparedness. You might have tried accomplishing something outside your skill level. We live in unpredictable times where being resilient and flexible eases anxiety and adversity. By adjusting expectations, you can succeed.
5. Be Sure to Try Again
If procrastination caused your adverse situation, figure out you need to stop that behavior. If you ignore things or let tasks slip because they’re uncomfortable, the situation worsens. Taking action, however imperfect, beats postponement.
6. Learn How to Conquer Your Fears
Often, adversity stems from not taking action due to fear. When you face your fears, you move past adverse situations and get on with life. Try daring activities like bungee jumping, rock climbing, or ballroom dancing. The point is creating situations outside your norm. Overcoming one fear helps overcome all of them. Freedom lies on the other side of fear.
7. Be Honest With Yourself
People tend to hide true feelings or deny facing adverse situations. Try introspection to learn what’s truly going on. As always, I defer to Nature because the closer we get to Nature, the closer we get to our true nature. Observing storms teaches us about resilience.
A storm is a metaphor for any adversity. Just as we say “this hit me like a storm, and I was not prepared,” storms pass, and storms will come again. Learn skills to stay resilient and prepared, and you’ll enjoy navigating life’s blizzards and blackouts.
