As the seasons change, we are reminded of the power and role of Mother Earth. The reality is, without her, all life ceases to exist and she has the final say. I have spent most of my life trying to relay this vital reality through writing, photography, and multiple eco-entrepreneurial ventures. Some days, when the shores of California are saturated in oil, I feel like I am suffocating. Although much of the majesty of the Earth is tormented, it eventually comes back to life in some form or another. The Earth is astonishing and can tolerate a lot of abuse, but how long will it take before she decides it is time for humans to move to another galaxy so she can provide for the rest of the cooperative sentient beings? 

The closer we get to Nature the closer we get to our true nature.

The Earth is Our Home

Many people are wondering when life will get back to normal. It might be better to ask: Can we use this opportunity to create a major shift, learn from our mistakes, and build something better? The answer is yes! There are many silver linings for the environment in the COVID-19 era. All around the world, we see the environmental benefits of changing our old consumption habits that negatively impact life on Earth. When we take care of the environment by respecting and working with Mother Nature, we will see human health and wellbeing dramatically improve.

Attuned and responsive, Nature adapts to changing conditions. Remember that we are part of Nature and can adapt too. All life evolves to survive. Integrating conservation and preservation measurements in times of distress and prosperity is necessary.

Honor and incorporate the innate wisdom of the systems and cycles of Nature,
the fragile web which connects all life, and we will heal ourselves and humanity.

Here are a few things we can each incorporate into our own lives, or demand to happen.

Change consumption habits to restore and regenerate.

When most of the world shut down due to COVID, CO2 emissions were reduced. With fewer cars commuting and contributing to the polluting fossil fuel-driven economy, the Earth received unexpected relief. Our global pollution footprint dramatically shrunk faster than any government policy to date. The reduction in industrial output resulted in less greenhouse gas emissions and cleaner air. Turtles came back to the beaches in Australia, and wildlife across the world experienced recovery. When we lessened the vibration of consumption, it lowered noise and light pollution, which calmed our nerves, and we could hear the birds’ serenade. In the near absence of human activity, we witnessed the inklings of Earth’s regeneration.

By consuming and traveling less, we reduce the spread of further epidemics. We can eliminate deforestation by consuming less, which supports reduced carbon emissions and fosters recovery. We desperately need our forests to sequester carbon. When we heal the Earth, our health crisis will decrease accordingly. The climate corrects itself. Hopefully, COVID will awaken the world to the benefits of living in harmony with Nature.

Teach our children well.

It’s time to put the ideology of “Think globally. Act locally.” into action. This slogan encourages people to think about the global ramifications of their actions. By improving things locally, we are helping the world to be more habitable for all.

Parents can teach their children to cherish the essentials of life and sustain a balanced society. The educational curriculum from the first day of school through higher education must be updated to include the rights of Nature and to value biodiversity. A new 21st-century education system could awaken and inspire the global community to restore, protect, and cultivate more stewards of the Earth. We have profound, deep-seated work to do and opportunities at every grade level to create an education system supportive of Nature’s wisdom.

Greta Thunberg, a Swedish teenage environmental activist, is mobilizing the world on climate change. She reminds us, “A change is coming.” She demonstrates that when we stand courageous, unified for justice, and strive to bridge the gaps between science and reality, we will make better choices together. The world yearns for diversity and balance.

Embrace change.

We have the opportunity to compost what does not serve the welfare of people and the planet. Most young people I speak with who are living in urban areas either want to move out of the rat race and back to the land or talk about how to make their cities more habitable. A sustainable lifestyle is no longer a “progressive” idea, but rather a sensible one, full of opportunities.

When things break, we can often repair them or learn to live without them. We can buy more secondhand goods instead of new items. Refuse to buy single-use plastics of any kind, including bottled water, and eliminate toxic products. Each positive change for the planet reinforces our commitment to future generations. As we transition into a new reality, we can not only reverse the climate and environmental crisis, but come together as an awakened species and fix the planet.

Eat a whole-foods balanced diet. 

Nourishment is our lifeline, and our bodies are temples for our souls. When we choose to grow and eat food as close to the Earth and in its natural state as possible, we change our gut’s microbiome, the Earth’s microbiome, and the health of all living systems. A whole-foods balanced diet also helps address obesity and health issues that are signs of an imbalanced environment. We can follow a vegan, plant-based lifestyle, or learn to raise the animals we eat. At the very least, know the farmer and ranchers who feed us. Meet your meat before you eat.

Add Nature activities into our daily lives, recreation, and travel.

Besides the obvious health benefits of physical exercise outside, walking or riding bikes to get where we’re going lowers the CO2 emissions from motorized modes of transportation. In urban areas, we can expand pedestrian and bike-friendly rights-of-way and encourage more people to walk or ride a bike.

Travel has turned into unsustainable tourism, but we have an opportunity to shift back to traveling with the intention to honor the diversity of the culture and the ecology. We can focus on establishing more local eco-travel in our surrounding cities by promoting the benefits of outdoor recreation versus unsustainable amusement parks, nightclubs, and gambling casinos. Exploring closer to home on a “staycation,” rather than boarding a plane for a vacation that often puts people in debt, will benefit the local economy. All that money could go back into building local infrastructure while beautifying where we live. We can make our ecosystems so lovely that we do not want to leave, versus escaping a polluted city.

Focus on preservation, conservation, the rights of Nature, and cultural diversity. Diversity and compassion sustain a healthy society and environment. Individually, you can put in a garden, plant trees, and provide a safe habitat for beneficial animals and insects—if you live in an area where these activities are possible. If you don’t, consider moving or figuring out how to create green belts and community gardens where you live. There are plenty of examples of regenerative urban renewal projects happening around the world. Key to avoiding gentrification is to lift up communities without increasing property taxes and robbing residents of their culture. 

When privilege takes precedence over people and the environment, society erodes.

We know an equal opportunity education improves communities. Education costs less than imprisonment. This is an important topic that must be addressed to preserve cultural and ecological diversity.

On a broader scale, we can create what many scientists and conservation experts suggest: safe havens for wildlife across the planet. This will help keep the viruses contained in the species that are immune to them and minimize their deadly spread to humans. Wilderness preservation costs a small amount compared to the funds used to bail out banks and the corrupt corporations that are at the root of the problems.

Living together on this beautiful planet — our life support system — along with all of creation, means considering the inalienable rights of all life. If we champion “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” for the birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees, and all sentient beings, this redefines our choices and decisions as we move into the future. Mother Earth is waiting for a treaty, but can not wait much longer. The clock is ticking. We have much to learn from the indigenous cultures that have so much to offer societies that have lost their connection to Nature. Living in harmony with Nature is the wisest old belief system to rebalance the Earth.

Marinated Portabella Mushroom Steaks with Avocado Chimichurri and Sunflower Horseradish Cream

Mushrooms. Immune strengthening, longevity boosting, anti-inflammatory powerhouses.  

 They taste incredible in many cooked recipes and have a texture quite similar to meat.   

 Not only are mushrooms good for you, but they are also good for our planet Well known mycologist Paul Stamets shares that mushrooms can potentially solve some of our most pressing and serious problems. 

 During his extremely popular TED talk, Stamets explains how they can:  

  • Clean up oil spills all over the world 
  • Absorb farm pollution 
  • Fight off smallpox and flu viruses 
  • Combat insects 
  • Create rich environments for farms and new forests, and 
  • Become a sustainable fuel source for the future 

 To add to that, mushrooms are a gut-friendly food! They are prebiotic, meaning that they feed your healthy gut bacteria.  

Speaking of mushrooms, have you every looked really closely at the underside of a fungi? 

*mycelium and connectedness with everyones brains and interconnectedness of all life-kind and earth*  

 Marinated Mushroom Steaks  

  • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar 
  • 3 cloves garlic- crushed  
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil 
  • Juice from 1/2 a lemon 
  • 1/4 tsp coriander 
  • 1/2 tsp salt 
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder 
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika 

 Stir together all ingredients in a bowl until well combined. Add marinade to prepared mushrooms  (de-stemmed and wiped with a wet towel) in a shallow glass pan. Allow mushrooms to soak in marinade for at least 30 minutes. Place mushrooms on grill on high heat bottom side down for about 7 minutes, then flip and cook the top for another 3 minutes.  

 *These mushrooms would be amazing on a bun as a burger as well!* 

Avocado Chimichurri 

  • 1 cup parsley  
  • 3 sprigs of oregano  
  • 1/3 cup olive oil  
  • 1/2 of an avocado 
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon 
  • Salt and pepper to taste  
  • Splash of water till desired consistency  
  • * Optional jalepeno for those who love spice  

 Add all ingredients except water to a blender or food processor. Process/blend until well combined. Add a small splash of water until the chimichurri reaches your desired consistency.  

*This sauce can be used on anything to instantly boost the flavor of a dish*  

Sunflower Horseradish Cream 

  • 3/4 cup soaked raw sunflower seeds (overnight works well)  
  • 6 tablespoons horseradish 
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil (olive works too)  
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon  
  • 1 tsp salt  
  • Tablespoons of water until desired consistency  

Blend all ingredients in a high powered blender or food processor, enjoy!
