How to Adjust to These Evolutionary Times

While most of the country is experiencing extreme winter weather, Hawaii, although a bit colder than usual, has blessed us with enough sunshine and rain to keep everything thriving, including me. 

I have turned into an extroverted hermit, adjusting to the escalating covid insanity and keeping busy doing new things that I love to do. Making these adjustments has brought me closer to the land, my dearest friends, loving husband, and animals.

How are you adjusting to this evolutionary time? Climate change and COVID and its variants are here to stay, leaving us all questioning what’s real, what’s next. The state of the world can feel like a burden or an opportunity, and it’s up to us to decide which one it is. It’s a choice that only we can make for ourselves.

Part of the process to heal and get over the COVID blues is to stop doubting ourselves. This comes with a healthy attitude. Share your feelings with those you trust and who wish to help you adjust your mindset.

Adjusting our attitudes, diets, and bodies can make all the difference in our outlook on the world. If you have ever been to a chiropractor and experienced the relief of nagging pain, you know what I mean. A simple adjustment can make all the difference in our lives. We just have to be willing to let go and learn to posture ourselves to keep the nagging pain away. Choosing mindful thoughts and words helps us adjust.

Sometimes it takes a more persistent approach and many adjustments. But it’s worth it. It makes little sense to hold on to anything that does not serve us. By learning how to repair and bridge the gaps in our lives, we have more quality of life. 

So how do we do this?

Benefits of Adjusting our Attitudes

Here’s a little story:

My father spent his career as a caring dentist by doing his best to save teeth, but when it came time to pull a rotten tooth, he did. I know from experience that removing a tooth can be painful and emotional. After all, it is an intimate part of us, and it never grows back. Even if the tooth once served you, it can still make you sick — if it’s rotten, yank it out! Some people’s teeth get so rotten that they can become ill by the poison toxins released into their bodies and never recover.

Why is it that sometimes we feel we cannot bear to lose, whether it is a tooth, a game, a toxic relationship, a dysfunctional marriage, or a mediocre career? What about an unhealthy habit we excuse ourselves from or a poor attitude? Is it okay to think this way? Trying too hard can leave us empty and defeated, even when we win. Who says you have to win or be a loser – it’s all or nothing? Time for an attitude adjustment.

After my father pulled a tooth, he would build his patients a functional bridge. Yes, it’s an adjustment, but with the right attitude, gratitude sets in when eating becomes more enjoyable. Likewise, in Nature and in life, there are ways to rebuild. A spider weaves a new web when one is destroyed, and a tree grows new limbs. Engagement with friends and mentors can provide the right conditions to break destructive patterns, change our attitudes, and adjust to these changing times. Many successful people say, “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Who are you spending time with? Spending time with people you care about and who care about you becomes an infinite source of nourishment and strength. These people are our functional bridges, our attitude adjusters.

Benefits of Adjusting Our Diets to a Low Carbon FoodPrint:

  • A low carbon foodprint diet can improve our health, adjust our attitudes and heal the Earth. Eating a low-carbon foodprint diet matters.
  • Eat as if your life depends on it. Support your local farmers and enjoy nutritious regional food, knowing you are strengthening your local economy and the well-being of Mother Earth. Consuming foods that boost your mood and immune system will reduce anxiety and stress levels. Eat a diversified diet with plenty of fresh plant-based foods: fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, whole grains, healthy fats, and quality meat and dairy. If you are vegan, it is essential to beef up other areas of your diet.
  • Add immune-building foods such as turmeric, ginger, citrus (especially lemons), mushrooms, peppers, garlic, and onions. Fermented vegetables, such as homemade sauerkraut and kimchi, are beneficial to gut health. Foods high in selenium, vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, B vitamins, zinc, proteins, and probiotic microorganisms are excellent choices. In times of additional stress, high-quality supplements are also a good idea.
  • Stress eating is terrible for our well-being because we overindulge or, the complete opposite, forget to eat. Neither is the correct answer. If you find yourself falling into either trap, it’s time to do your research or speak with a nutritional coach. Alcohol and other addictive substances are not the adjustment or our supportive friends we are looking for.

How might things be different if governments adjusted mandates to build our immune systems and they supported us to do so?

  • knees even and pointing straight ahead
  • body weight distributed evenly on both feet. 
    • When sitting down, keep your chin parallel to the floor; your shoulders, hips, and knees at even heights; and your knees and feet pointing straight ahead.

I hope your new year is off to a wonderful start. With the virus flaring up and showing no real sign of relief, it is more important than ever to make a connection to our personal health and the health of the planet. We must boost our immune system and Mother Earth to stay healthy. As she heats up, fevers rise, and this is no way to proceed. We have options. It’s time we all make a sincere commitment to be conscious consumers. By doing so, we can heal ourselves and the planet. That is a wonderful notion. ❤️

One of the most pertinent questions to ask is how we can responsibly nourish all the people and the flora and fauna in the world? Living a life dependent on an excess of anything is detrimental to our health and the health of the Earth. Changing how we consume will change the political, economic, and ecological landscapes. The healing starts with adopting a Soulutionist mindset.

How we eat impacts everything! Our food choices can help mitigate the climate crisis, reduce pollution, and help feed others, all while we become and stay healthy. 

I grew up in the ’60s and ’70s, eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) in a suburban town in New Jersey. As a child, I unintentionally acquired poor eating habits that were imposed on my generation by the fierce industrial food complex. Microwavable and packaged foods became fashionable. It was the norm to fill our grocery carts with processed products that lacked any actual substance. I did not consider how this way of eating was affecting both my health and theEarth’s health. Was there anyone? Like most people, my parents fed into deceit. There was a SERIOUS lack of connection with the food we consumed, and in most cases, the scenario continues to worsen.

IIn my college years, I studied ecology and organic agriculture. I discovered the power of the soil and food, how we are a product of what we eat, and that what we eat has a profound effect on more than just our bodies. What I consumed could consume me.

At 25 years old, I got into the restaurant business where, for 37 years, I strived to educate our staff and customers about these issues. We served Food for People and the Planet at The Fresh Sourdough Express Bakery and Cafe. I bucked a fierce tide back in the 80s and 90s, and our natural foods cafe defied the odds and flourished. While I was out to change the way people viewed food, the American mindset was in super-size-me mode — the bigger and cheaper, the better.

In 2011, I became a certified health coach through The Institute for Integrative Nutrition. My studies inspired me to continue learning and to encourage others to recognize the vital impact that our food choices have on everything. Smart food choices can cool down the planet and unclutter the landscapes. Furthermore, food is sacred, it is medicine and a human right.

Meanwhile, as the size of Americans continues to grow, so too do the environmental problems. Most of what is consumed today can barely be considered food. The industrial food complex infiltrated our food system to please the addicted palettes they created. In the greed for profits, the intrinsic value of our food has gotten lost, and all life has been compromised.

So what can we do?

Nourishing food comes from the Earth, not packed in plastic containers and distributed by large corporations. If people took the time to read and understand the lists of incomprehensible ingredients on their consumables, maybe they’d think twice about polluting their bodies. Many do not question — they consume what is fed to them. This disconnection with where our food comes from plants seeds for disease.

The way we eat builds the foundation of our body.

You’ve probably heard me say, “health is your greatest wealth.” Those who agree with me know how essential it is to reconnect with our ancestral roots. This is where we unlock the wisdom and the regenerative medicine found in food with respect to nutrient-dense soil, where carbon gets sequestered. When connected to the source of our food, we live a healthier and more conscious life. 

The best way to prevent disease is to choose to eat healthily immune system-building food. 

Eating a primarily plant-based diet has been essential to regenerate my body, mind, and spirit. A plant-based diet is not just good for our health; it is good for the Earth’s health. A healthy, low carbon footprint diet also saves money, improves your health, and keeps you fit! My advice is to eat all the colors of the rainbow, as diversity is essential to life. Our bodies thrive when we mix things up; this helps us get a wide variety of nutrients. Listen to your body and notice the subtle signs.

Tangible things we can do:

  • Enjoy weekly farmers’ markets and purchase from local farmers.
  • Rejoice in making family meals and making food with friends often.
  • Every day, find a space without distractions where you can sit and enjoy your food.
  • Bless and give thanks for the nourishment in your food.
  • Take the time to breathe when eating.
  • Be mindful of how what you consume feels, both as it enters your body and throughout the digestion process.
  • Read labels and stay informed about what you are consuming and where it comes from.

What is Your Foodprint?

There are plenty of reasons we all must be mindful of our food consumption beyond our health. Not enough attention is given to the effects of our obsession with food on others, the earth, or the future. How we live our life determines the survival of all species, including our own. Gobbling up finite resources for personal gain without taking into consideration the health of our planet and future generations is not sustainable, nor responsible.

  • Environmental pollution because of modern agricultural practices results in harmful effects on all life. The soil is disturbed, culture affected, and landscape scarred. Finite resources and entire ecosystems, including the dwindling rainforests, are devoured for the sake of cheaper, nutritionally deficient products. Agricultural pollution is responsible for many diseases, as is the food we consume from the pollution-driven, dysfunctional system. Food Pollution is out of hand: eating away at our health and the starving plane
  • The rainforests are considered the lungs of the Earth because they produce most of the world’s oxygen and sequester carbon. According to the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, “Tropical deforestation is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and the erosion of ecosystem services.” Much of the deforestation is attributed to the raising of cattle for their cut-rate meat, which is abused by franchises worldwide. In addition, the production of palm oil, which is used in many consumables and in the feed for cattle, poses a major threat to rainforests everywhere.
  • Half of the topsoil on the planet has been lost in the last 150 years. Besides erosion, soil quality is affected by other aspects of agriculture. These impacts include compaction, loss of soil structure, nutrient degradation, and soil salinity. These are very severe issues.” The steep decline in soil has occurred while the world’s demand for food is skyrocketing. It is estimated the world will need to grow 50 percent more food by 2050 to feed an expected population of nine billion people.
  • Landfills cannot keep up with the waste. Corporate conglomerates are producing horrific products from chemically infested crops, adding to the pollution. Where is the power in Powerade? It takes enormous amounts of energy (power) to grow the crops to produce these and then MORE energy to make, transport, and warehouse these processed inferior food products, that litter the landscape, waterways, and oceans. Eating a corporate diet, (the Standard American Diet – SAD) makes people sick, is destroying the planet, and taking away from future generations.
  • Food waste had become an epidemic and it’s everyone’s business! According to author Dana Gunders of Natural Resources Defense Council, “Getting food from the farm to our fork eats up 10 percent of the total U.S. energy budget, uses 50 percent of U.S. land and swallows 80 percent of all freshwater consumed in the United States. Yet, 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten.” According to the World Economic Forum, there is more than enough food to feed the entire planet, we just have to stop wasting it.
  • Dosomething.org, reported that 23.5 million people live in food deserts, which are areas with limited healthy food choices. Grocery stores do not exist in food deserts, or they are too far away for low-income people to reach. The unacceptable choices are buying groceries at convenience stores or settling for cheap meals from fast-food restaurants. A high-calorie diet with little nutrition is a formula for failure. In addition, the crime rate is higher where there are food deserts.
  • Food, agriculture, and Climate Crises. Industrial farming is directly responsible for 14-24 percent of global greenhouse gasses (GHGs. Half of all applied fertilizer ends up in the atmosphere or in local waterways. Livestock produces 18 percent of GHGs). Deforestation, 70 percent of which is undertaken to make way for agriculture, constitutes another 18 percent of global emissions. What we eat is responsible for more carbon pollution than all the world’s planes, trains, and automobiles. All in all, what we eat accounts for nearly a third of all GHGs. The Rainforest Alliance reported that agriculture drives 80 percent of tropical deforestation.

Although the problems of the world are increasingly complex,

the solutions remain embarrassingly simple.

While the future of preventing contamination and food injustice in our food systems may seem bleak, there are ways in which the citizens of the world can combat this forecast. It starts with admitting there are problems, knowing there are Soulutions, and taking action. Hopefully, the more people are aware of the issues, the more they will want to consume Earth-conscious foods.

So what are some Soulutions?

We can all choose to eat healthy now! Truly the greatest investment you can make is by simply changing the way you eat. It can make the difference between being a BIGFOOT Soulutionist by having a little carbon footprint. The carbon footprint of a vegetarian diet is about half of a meat-lover’s diet. According to Dana Hunnes PhD, MPH, RD  “Shifting away from animal-based foods could not only add up to 49% to the global food supply without expanding croplands; but would also significantly reduce carbon emissions and waste by-products that end up in our oceans and as seafood by-products.”

  • Make eating a spiritual act. At each meal, give thanks from the depths of your soul to the plants and animals who gave up their life for another life, and to the farmers who feed the world.
  • Support your local farmers or become one. The average age of a farmer today is fifty-eight, which means we desperately need younger, intelligent farmers who are devoted to interweaving the cycles of Nature into their food growing practices. 
  • Demand consciously raised food. Available data proves that sustainable farming practices can feed the world and save the planet. Perhaps most intriguing, bio-intensive methods grow farmable soil at a rate 60 times faster than occurs in Nature, while conventional modern farming methods deplete farmable soil through wind and water erosion. Regenerative, carbon farming practices can actually reverse climate change by putting more carbon into the ground than is released into the atmosphere! Thankfully, large investments are being given to regenerative agriculture. We, as consumers, need to demand produce that is grown for the health of the people and the planet!
  • Demand an end to hunger! Dedicated people and organizations are working tirelessly to resolve world hunger and mitigate climate change, but they need our support. The Worldwatch Institute states, “A fair number of agribusiness executives, agricultural and ecological scientists, and international agriculture experts believe a large-scale shift to organic farming would not only increase the world’s food supply but might be the only way to eradicate hunger.”
  • Get connected. There are plenty of ethical organizations and businesses that are fighting hard to turn over the injustice happening to the land and to the people!
  • Don’t waste food!
  • Plant gardens and kindness, and consume less.

Soulutions to consumption can change the political, economic, and environmental landscapes.

The growing sustainable movement of today brings hope that the values of raising our food and living in balance with Nature are viable and can help turn the climate crisis around. The more connected we are to the sources of our food, the closer we get to the Soulutions. In tune with the truth, we are wiser consumers and better stewards of the Earth. When we are living in harmony, we feel on a deeper level and communicate what’s on our minds from our hearts.

Each action we take has significant consequences. Governments and economic systems have manipulated us long enough. It is up to us to get educated on what is in everything we consume. By becoming aware of how our actions affect the entire ecological system and other nations around the Earth, we can make conscious choices for a healthy life and planet. Living like the future matters, for at least seven generations, matters for our children, our grandchildren, and generations beyond. What seeds can you plant for them to harvest?

For me, New Year represents a time to reflect, renew, and regenerate what I am grateful for. 

I am grateful for my health, loving husband, darling animals, extended Hawaiian family, Mother Earth, and to you for being part of my life!

Reflection 2021

Ask yourself, what old beliefs can I let go to achieve my desires? 

Am I heading in the right direction? Am I ready to set aside fears and energy vampires? Our energy is drawn to what we focus on.

Renew Joy 2022

So ask yourself, what am I willing to do to grow in the right direction? Generosity is fertilizer for our souls and being generous uplifts others. Now is the perfect time to renew your commitment to the things that bring you joy. Your joy is like a magnet, attracting more joy and more joyful people.

Regenerate Generosity 2022

Growth does not happen on its own. By reviewing and renewing what is joyful, you regenerate those juicy, good intentions. Your magnetic energy moves you were you in the right direction. Speaking of the right direction ….

It feels good to be back writing after a month of resting my eyes and hyperactive mind. For sure, this has been a time of reflection and fun, gathering with friends, our darling granddaughter, and precious son, who visited the first couple of weeks in December. We had a blast, laughing, dancing, and playing games. Lots of that happened while in the ocean, on a sandy beach, or in the kitchen preparing and eating ono-licious food. My granddaughter reminds me of the power of imagination, being joyful and generous. I am renewing my commitment  to live by my word; prioritize health, family business. 

In the second half of December, I was in deep thought while celebrating the holidays, including my 34th solstice wedding anniversary with the man I love. As COVID spikes again, I spend more time in Nature where I feel most at home, safe, and fortunate. Time spent among the tropical flora and fauna regenerates my imagination, envisioning a world where all of lifekind is nurtured. 

I also had a tooth extracted and a relatively new bridge removed on Dec 21st.

Losing a tooth, the new bridge, time, and money compounded the pain and reality that my father was a dentist, making me a dentist daughter who should have listened to her dad ~ “sugar is a killer Donna.”  Well, now, that’s water under the bridge.

After the tooth extraction, the day before Christmas Eve, I caught a cold…. yes, colds still exist 😇. I woke up sneezing and feeling achy. Getting a cold after oral surgery in a COVID surge was an unexpected bummer. Sneezing and blowing my nose was a no-no on the post-surgery handout outlining all the dos and don’ts after surgery. Thankfully, it was just a cold! 

Over the past 40 years, I had other teeth pulled. One because I cracked it while chewing a-seeded bagel, better known as everything bagel, and the others because of antiquated enormous amalgam fillings. The teeth could not withstand being filled and crowned again. I ask myself, is this part of aging, or the haunting reality of chewing too many pieces of Bazooka Bubble Gum and Tootsie Rolls devoured in my youth. I won many championships for the most gigantic pink bubble. Reflecting, was it worth it? I think NOT. Losing teeth that had been part of me for decades proved to be an emotional and a physical loss. Some things just can’t regenerate.

I learned the hard way, and I have the teeth, or lack of them, to prove it, but I learned! In retrospect, the wisdom received that impacted my pearly whites actually made me healthier. It forced me to listen to my body and changed my ways. Realizing that there are no more baby teeth and second chances are difficult to come by, I turned to diet and nutrition to fend off illness and further tooth decay. 

Even though I abandoned junk food and refined sugar (almost entirely 😇) years ago, I still pay the price of tooth decay from irresponsible, childish behavior. I blame it on seductive T. V commercials, billboards, radio ads, and supermarket end-caps, demanding I indulge. But ultimately, it is up to me to have the strength to resist and regenerate my health. 

My cold could have turned to COVID or something else, possibly worse! But it did NOT. Thankfully, my immune system is strong 😇. I dosed myself with quality food, sunshine, and supplements. The cold lasted only a few days, and the nagging tooth and face pain subsided. A positive attitude motivates me to be more vigilant about my health, which includes occasionally indulging in chocolate-chip-mint ice cream. 

With a renewed attitude, I choose to regenerate more healthy cells.
