Aloha Beautiful Souls! Today, we are going to take a dive into water! You’ve probably heard the saying, “water is life,” but have you ever pondered how important water really is? The information I share in this post on the wonders of water will blow your mind.

When I was a kid, some of my favorite summer activities, which kept me happily occupied for hours, were playing in the sprinkler or jumping into a chlorinated swimming pool and splashing around. The water seemed endless. I loved warm bubble baths after a day full of play! I’d fill the tub so full that the bubbles overflowed onto the bathroom floor. I never questioned my consumption: how much water I was wasting or how the chlorinated water and my bright pink bubble bath were affecting my health.

Before all of us were born, we developed in our mothers’ womb surround by amniotic fluid, which is mainly water. No wonder most of us still like a warm comforting bath. More than 60% of our bodies are made of water. From regulating our temperature to delivering oxygen and allowing our cells to grow, water is essential for our survival.

Yes, water is life, but is there really an endless supply available to support the growing population on Earth? Without water, our planet would be a barren wasteland. The reality is, while around 72 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered in water, the salty oceans hold about 97 percent of all water on our planet. That’s a wake-up call to those who believe there is an endless supply of drinking water. Check out this one minute video. You won’t be sorry.

Less than three percent of the Earth’s water is freshwater and of that amount, more than two-thirds is locked up in ice caps and glaciers. Water also exists in rivers and lakes, in the ground as soil moisture, in aquifers, in the air as water vapor, and in all of us. This all adds up to about 326 million trillion gallons of water on Earth. Water is a finite resource that circulates through the hydrological cycle. Only one-hundredth of 1 percent of the world’s water is readily available for human use. Now that’s just crazy, right? 


 

Why Hydrate

When I do not drink enough water, my joints hurt and my heart races. What are your symptoms? Studies show that 75% of US citizens suffer from chronic dehydration. Today’s Reminder: Drink More Water!

It’s important to consider that not all water is created equal. We use to feel safe drinking the tap water, and damn, why should it be any other way? In western society, they say it’s “safe” to drink tap water. Ask the people of Flint Michigan and those who reside in industrial manufacturing and agricultural areas, if their tap water, so-called drinking water, is safe to drink. In fact, even tap water in some regions of the developed United States has been linked to chronic diseases. When you dive a little deeper, you uncover that our municipal sources of water are contaminated with a wide range of chemicals and unwanted substances:

Here is a list of just a few of the chemicals routinely added to our water supply:

  • Liquified chlorine
  • Fluorosilicic acid
  • Aluminium sulphate
  • Calcium hydroxide
  • Sodium silicofluoride

 

Do you really want to put these chemicals in your body?

I recommend you check with your local water department and ask for a breakdown of what is in your water so you can make an educated decision for your well-being. Ask a lot of questions, get the specifics. Find out why they are adding what they are adding. This can help you determine the best water filtration system to install in your home. Like our food consumption blog when it comes to water, we want to have control of what we put into our precious bodies and those of our children.

  3. Try to never drink water in plastic bottles
  4. Eat organic whole foods that have a high water content

I am going to keep this brief, but this topic is as large as our oceans! It’s hard to believe when I was a kid, we drank the New Jersey tap water. We never imagined we would be drinking out of plastic bottles. Commercial implementation of single-use plastic water bottles did not even exist until 1970! OMG, how did we live without plastic water bottles, computers, and cell phones!? Well, we did, just fine in fact. 🙂

Bottled water dramatically adds to pollution. According to Ban the Bottle, making bottles to meet America’s demand for bottled water uses over 17 million barrels of oil annually, and we all know how fossil fuels negatively impact our environment. Plastic bottled water now holds the second-largest share of the beverage market in the US, ahead of milk and beer! That’s just crazy.

It’s 2019 and our world is drowning in plastic toxins: packaged and processed items that so many consume mindlessly. Plastics suffocate and flood the ocean, deplete the fisheries, and threaten all underwater life. We now find unsightly gigantic gyres — garbage patches floating out at sea. The earth takes hundreds to thousands of years to digest plastic, and no species can afford to wait that long. A 2017 study found that 79% of all the plastic humans have produced has ended up either in landfills or in nature. Mounds of so-called recyclables end up mingled in with the rest of human consumer waste. We leave the rest to litter streets, streams, and beaches. In 2010 alone, up to 12 million metric tons were dumped into the world’s oceans!

Single-use plastics are the most substantial part of the problem. The worst part is that, regardless of the recycling program initiatives, most plastic does not get recycled. We used to ship it to China, but China wised up and said… NO MORE. Now what?

In an article published in Time on May 29, 2019, titled, “Your Bottled Water Probably Has Plastic In It. Should You Worry?” author Markham Heid states: “Plastic contamination is rampant in bottled water. That was the unsettling conclusion of a study published last year in Frontiers in Chemistry that analyzed samples taken from 259 bottled waters sold in several countries and found that 93% of them contained ‘microplastic’ synthetic polymer particles.” These particles are contaminating the oceans. Not only that, many commercial bottled waters are just repackaged tap water. Not to mention that this water absorbs BPA from the plastic bottles which negatively affects our health. BPA-Free Does Not Mean Safe. Most plastics leach hormone-disrupting chemicals. Our bodies don’t know what to do with the artificial substances either.

An article written in 2017 for The Guardian states “A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021”. What is up with that! We must flip the script, be mindful in our lives, and END the use of single-use plastic bottles. We can invest our money in sustainable and regenerative Soulutions.

Mindful consumption of water is good for your health, but wasting water should be a crime. The fact is that nearly ⅓ of people in the world do not have access to fresh drinking water, and it’s getting worse. We must value water more, and come together to solve this humanitarian crisis. Too many people still think that because water is cheap, they can afford to waste it. It is more important now than ever to conserve water.

The United Nation addresses Water-related challenges

  • 1 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water services. (WHO/UNICEF 2017)
  • 5 billion people lack safely managed sanitation services. (WHO/UNICEF 2017)
  • 340,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases. (WHO/UNICEF 2015)
  • Water scarcity already affects four out of every 10 people. (WHO)
  • 90% of all natural disasters are water-related. (UNISDR)
  • 80% of wastewater flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused (UNESCO, 2017).
  • Around two-thirds of the world’s transboundary rivers do not have a cooperative management framework. (SIWI)
  • Agriculture accounts for 70% of global water withdrawal. (FAO)
  • Roughly 75% of all industrial water withdrawals are used for energy production. (UNESCO, 2014)


 

Positive Changes And Soulutions For Water Consumption

Drink enough water and do not waste it.

I may have been born as a Taurus, but I feel most alive when I am in the ocean. Every day or at least 300 days a year, I am in the water! Those other days I’m either traveling, sick, or the waves are enormous. When I am in the ocean, surrounded by tropical fish, dolphins, and breaching whales, I am reminded of the spirit of the water. When the seas are rough, calm, or stormy, I feel the emotions and the spirit of the sacred Earth.

It’s our collective responsibility to mindfully consume the water we depend on. What can we do immediately? Safe Water Drinking Foundation offers a laundry list of ways to conserve water. One of many things that I have done to conserve water since I was a young adult is to follow this rule “If it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down.”

The Shift to Living Consciously

Consciousness is the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings. Self-Awareness is having a clear perception of your character, including your thoughts, beliefs, motivation, emotions, strengths and weaknesses. The more conscious we are, the more self-awareness we have. We’re able to understand other people better, and how they perceive us. Our attitude and our responses to them are more genuine.

When we are in touch with what’s going on deep inside us, we can feel vulnerable. If we numb ourselves, we are unaware of what’s going on inside and around us. Feeling deprived or rejected leads to low self-esteem or depression. It can also lead to addictions, abuse, and other disorders. Our thoughts and energy are powerful. The thoughts and energy that bring us together, feels better than those that try to separate us. Separation leaves us empty with the need to fill ourselves with something.

Being conscious cultivates self-awareness and ignites courage. With self-awareness, we can avoid being mindless. We are in touch with our true self so our self-worth and self-esteem evolve. When we make decisions with intuitive wisdom, we enhance our life. Our inner beauty unfolds more deliberately when we trust and are in touch with ourselves.

Alice Boyes, Ph.D., a former clinical psychologist, researcher, and author offers more insight into what happens when we lose our sense of self. If we live without self-awareness, we cannot be mindful and can harm ourselves. When we hurt ourselves, it pains others and effects our surroundings. It’s good to find people you trust and can talk to when in pain or scared. It is liberating to peel back the layers of doubt and live consciously.

By cultivating conscious actions and thoughts, we deepen the connection we have with ourselves and increase our self-worth.

How I Cultivate Consciousness

There are many reasons to cultivate consciousness and to increase self-awareness. When we are happy and feel fulfilled, our life has more meaning. Our self-worth is elevated. Sometimes I lose touch with myself, and it becomes uncomfortable. Living in a vulnerable place feels nothing like success. Learning to be more mindful has helped me to succeed in business, relationships, and improved my health. I offer you some ways that work for me to stay balanced and self-aware.

  • Being out in Nature works for me. It is where I get grounded. I go for two mindful walks a day and surround myself with beauty. I often walk barefoot which helps me get centered. The feeling of the Earth beneath my feet awakens my senses. Present, I quiet my mind. I’m reminded of how grateful I am. 
  • Nature photography is a passion that gives me joy. My phone has a great camera that enables me to be creative and in the moment with each photo I take. I’m delighted by the tropical flowers, fruiting bananas, papayas, and pineapples. I am in awe of Nature’s beauty. I search for the perfect lighting. All the photos in my posts come from my encounters in Nature.
  • I love spending time in the ocean. The many beautiful shades of still clear blue water give me maximum peace of mind and fill me with joy. When I’m not on a mindful walk along the Kohala Coast on the Big Island, you may find me treading water in the Pacific Ocean. I contemplate. The water calms and refreshes my entire being. It’s the perfect place for me to let go of any bad vibes and energy. The wonders of the sea are regenerative. In the ocean, I’m respectful of where I am and aware of how important it is to be present. After all, there are sharks, sea turtles, rays, and countless species of fish.
  • Sky-Walks Meditation is my favourite and the most effective way for me to be present. It is something I do daily and share with my clients. Here’s how it’s done: Lie on your back, head facing downhill, on a slight incline. An incline moves blood more freely to your heart and brain. Lift your legs to the sky. While in this position, I do a series of gentle stretches. I breathe gently relaxing my whole being. Cloud-watching takes it to a whole other level. Grounded and focused, it’s easier to tune out the chatter, especially with the sound of the waves and wind.

Doing these daily practices, I can be mindful. The more present I am, the better I’m able to communicate. I’m more alert, conscious, and can discern matters that might have otherwise upset me. When upset, I’m unconsciously led to eat the wrong foods, say the wrong things, and not make the best choices. What do you do to stay present, to be conscious?

Maybe you have a park nearby that you haven’t frequented. Maybe you have a backyard, perfect for a little barefooted walk. Get creative about what brings you present moment awareness, mindfulness, and groundedness. Hop on a bus and “get out of Dodge.”

How do You Cultivate Self-Awareness?

In the present, we are in touch with our whole self. We have a greater sense of self-worth. 

The secret to self-awareness

If you wish to be more self-aware, learn how to love more consciously and love yourself more. Also, learn how to be present and listen to your inner voice. (link to self-love blog here) Pay close attention to what happens within your body and surroundings. It takes practice. It’s easy to get distracted, and emotions can get confused. When we take in the beauty of life, it opens us up to new experiences and helps us get through uncertain times. Living with love in our hearts, we can heal and heal others. It is liberating to have the awareness and motivation to seek soulutions.

Being self-aware, we know WHO we are, and WHAT we love to do. We have a purposeful “why” and are more inclined to help heal the Earth. The more consciously engaged and sentient people living in a careful, deliberate manner, the brighter our future.
So, take good care of yourself and live in your light.
