Introduction: Beyond the Pursuit of Happiness

These days, many people are unhappy, but that does not have to be the case. In this exploration, I offer you some powerful happiness SOULutions that go deeper than conventional wisdom. Do what makes YOU happy is advice we hear constantly, yet this guidance is not truly helpful, and it’s also misguided. The pursuit of happiness is a deeply ingrained concept, but like everything else in life, happiness isn’t so simple. True happiness emerges not from endless pleasure-seeking, but from meaningful action and deeper connection to others and purpose.

Redefining Happiness: From Satisfaction to Meaning

What does happiness mean to you? Many of us define happiness as what we get from others and our environment—we’re happy when our material and emotional needs are fulfilled. However, fulfilling our needs doesn’t always make us happy, and in many cases, that directly conflicts with the happiness we seek. For example, a job that covers basic needs could get in the way of your need for creativity, flexibility, and freedom. We tend to think of happiness as static, something you either have or don’t, but happiness is actually fluid and fleeting—it’s doing things that genuinely make you happy.

The pursuit of happiness is not an illusion—we just need to redefine it for ourselves. What makes you happy might make someone else miserable. We can broaden our definition of happiness by recognizing it’s not just about receiving pleasant experiences, but also about what you can give to others. When you bend and broaden your definition of happiness, you take on a new shape, opening up more room for happy times. It is known that the more we give, the happier we become. Love is the nuclear fuel of joy and delight.

Five Powerful Ways to Increase Your Happiness Through Giving

Here are proven ways to start giving and loving more that will elevate your happiness:

  • Listen. See every conversation as a chance to connect—pay attention to every word the other person says, notice their tone and body language, and ask questions. Being a good listener is an underestimated quality that makes others feel valued and heard.

  • Give things to others. Do you knit, paint, write poetry, or create in other ways? Make something and give it away. Giving is a beautiful love language that doesn’t require expectation of return.

  • Volunteer. Take time to think of what’s important to you—your values, causes you’d like to champion, and skills you can offer. From working in a soup kitchen to becoming a mentor, there is a place for all of us to give of our time and talent.

  • Be kind. Make it a purpose to be kind to others every single day—little acts of kindness have a contagious effect. Compliment someone, help with groceries, offer extra work support, or simply smile at everyone you encounter.

  • Become a mentor. Teach others how to live and work like the future matters. You have answers and insights to help someone start their journey and shine.
