Introduction: The Art Show That Changed Everything

Before I dive into the key to living your truest life, you should know that self-empowerment is healthy and fulfilling and is evident in its intrinsic benefits. To succeed, we first have to believe we can, even if it can feel uncomfortable. Inner confidence strengthens our relationships, enhances our careers, helps us reach goals, and overcome roadblocks. Last weekend, I did my first art show at the Kohala Artist Coop, a gallery of 20 talented local artists. To put it mildly, I was a bundle of nerves, anxious, and excited all at the same time for the weeks leading to the event.

Most people who know me see me as courageous and confident—maybe it’s because I get things done. I am a doer, and it takes self-empowerment to get things done, even if it comes with self-doubt. It also takes having a purposeful why that drives your passion. But most importantly, it takes knowing that to get things done well is to empower others to help.

Reason #1: Expand Your Skills

Professional athletes, brilliant scientists, renowned leaders, artists, and successful career people all understand the importance of honing their talents. Furthermore, they also understand the danger of neglecting their talents. To empower yourself means to believe in and support the things that make you who you are.

Investing in yourself could be:

  • Taking courses to expand your knowledge
  • Working with a mentor
  • Climbing a mountain
  • Anything that pushes you to improve and grow

The life you want, the career you’re shooting for, and the relationship you desire require focused attention and the employment of your skills at any age.

Reason #2: Build Resilience

Get comfortable with failure, and you’ll be more capable of experiencing success. Too many people genuinely believe it’s better not to try than to try and fail. Failure can be painful, and complications can feel like the end of the world, but by being resilient, we learn to take risks and learn from all of them. To be resilient in the face of fear, having a certain internal confidence allows us to take that necessary leap of faith.

You deserve to become your authentic self; to do this, you must be resilient enough to try. Without resilience, you could spend a lifetime on the sidelines of your dreams.

Reason #3: Achieve Your Desires

What are your goals? You might have short-term goals, like getting to the gym a few times a week or being in bed every night by 10 P.M. Maybe you have long-term goals that seem out of reach at the moment, like starting your own business, writing a book, buying a new home, or starting a family.

How can you reach these goals if you don’t give yourself the necessary tools?

Empowerment expands your skills and builds resilience to overcome and push on, all to fulfill your greatest desires. It’s learning to tell yourself that you are worthy of doing whatever you desire. The positive mindset of self-empowerment helps you refrain from self-sabotage.

Reason #4: Grow Confidence

To be confident is to believe that you can face any obstacle. Confidence reaffirms what you already know. Confidence trusts that you will find a way if you find a situation out of your depth. An empowered woman or man can be themselves and honestly convey their opinions and thoughts through solid communication. Unlike arrogance, confidence can be both bold and amenable.

The more you enable the positive in yourself, the better you can learn to trust and bet on your own outcomes. It’s easier to have confidence when you are engaged in things you believe in.

Reason #5: Empower Others

Empowered people empower others. A strong community that cares for and supports one another desperately needs empowered individuals to help raise up those in need. True leaders understand the importance of serving those around them and sharing with others when they find true joy and fulfillment.

The best leaders build other leaders.

Furthermore, empowering others teaches us humility. If you have a mentor, teacher, or leader who has helped you, then you know firsthand the benefit of this relationship. You’ll also gain perspective when you see others through their journeys. Ask yourself: who in your life could use empowerment?
